Before I actually start, I want to give you an understanding. I’m from near South Wales, born on the Murrumbidgee River, which flows into the Murray, which the Murray flows into South Australia. ![]() To understand why I have got the opportunity today, to talk in front of you, you need to understand where I have come from. I don’t want to assume knowledge, necessarily, of some of the history, so if you want to try to synopsize that a little bit for everybody, so they have an understanding… I might as well go straight into my talk, huh? In introducing me Jeff, I have to acknowledge that me being not born of this country, Melbourne, I have to acknowledge the traditional owners of Melbourne, the Wurundjeri people, in their customs and their beliefs, because if I don’t do that, as an indigenous person of this country, I’m not adhering to laws and protocols that have been here not for 217 years, since Captain Cook sailed in his “great endeavor.” I am a descendant of peoples of this country for over 100,000 years. Even sitting in this audience, and only seeing one other black man, person, is difficult. It’s an opportunity for me, obviously being this color, in this country, and people sort of try to suggest that it’s not like that. For me, music is more than just the audio and the sound that resonates. The opportunity for you as singer-songwriters, musicians, people within the industry itself and what is music, and what can it do. Won’t you please give a warm welcome to Mr Kutcha Edwards. He is also an activist and he’s come to speak a little bit about his career. He’s a singer-songwriter, highly respected here. She served on the Annenberg Inclusion Board, is a 2019 Sundance Episodic Lab fellow, and recently spent three months as a Sundance Advisor in Residence. ![]() In 2000, Edwards co-founded the non-profit organization Colour Entertainment, a networking group for diverse creative executives in TV, Film, Digital, as well as assistants, all designed to connect current and future industry executives with one another.Įdwards graduated from Vassar College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater and an MFA in Writing for Film and TV at Emerson College. While heading up UPN’s Comedy division as the SVP of Comedy Development she developed GIRLFRIENDS, THE PARKERS, and MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE.Įdwards also produced the movie of the week A CHRISTMAS DETOUR for Hallmark and the one-hour drama series SEX, LOVE, AND SECRETS. After moving to television, she served as a senior executive at FOX where she developed LIVING SINGLE, CLUELESS, and THE WILD THORNBERRYS. Early in her career, she worked as a creative executive in features at both Disney and Sony under such talents as Garry Marshall and Laura Ziskin. Prior to HBO, Edwards was a key corporate diversity executive at Comcast/NBCUniversal for over five years where she oversaw over 20 divisions, launched employee resource groups, and introduced diverse creative talent to NBC, USA, Syfy, Bravo, and Telemundo.Įdwards’ career spans both television and film. The pilots she produced through the HBOAccess Writing and Directing fellowships have screened at major film festivals including Tribeca and SXSW, and garnered multiple awards. In her former executive role, she oversaw all of the emerging artists programs for HBO, HBOMax, and Turner. She has a feature film and two television pilots in development with various studios and consults for Apple Studios, PBS, and Sony on their early and mid-career pipeline programs. Kelly Edwards recently transitioned from inside the network ranks into a writing and producing deal with HBO under her Edwardian Pictures banner. ![]()
